Yard Shunter / Banksman
This course from Dulson Training is specifically designed to allow appropriate individuals within your business to prove and pass set tasks to enable them to become a competent yard shunter.
Upon completion of the course candidates will be issued with a certificate of achievement.
The course will consist of a number of key elements that our instructor will comprehensively explain. The candidate will be asked to demonstrate proving that understanding has taken place in this critical sector of transport.
We are keen to keep courses very structured depending on a candidate's experience and will discuss this at length during your booking to confirm that all your requirements are being met.
Each course will begin with a small powerpoint presentation covering relevant subject matter like Health and Safety guidelines, Safe systems of work, Hazards associated with this task and equipment used.To further strengthen a candidate's ability to fulfill this task, a brief theory test both before and after practical training will take place at which point we would hope to see a better understanding of the job role.
Practical training which many would see as the main area of consideration would involve:
- Vehicle / Trailer familiarisation including vehicle defects ( company specific )
- Manoeuvring a tractor unit / tug ( uncoupled )
- Coupling and uncoupling to a trailer ( different types of trailer / unit / tug )
- Manoeuvring when coupled
- Reversing both left and right
Due to the nature of this course, we would offer this training on either a 1 to 1 basis or 2 to 1 basis (2 candidates to 1 instructor) and the length of the course would be determined on a candidate's relevant experience.
For a novice looking to complete this course we would like to spend around 2 days / 12 hours in total (broken over two 6 hour sessions) as any longer we feel a candidate becomes fatigued and loses concentration easily. The second 6 hour session would focus on a candidate completing all elements to the required standard including a marked test. If your company, like many others, would like two people to go through this course then we can easily accommodate this on the same 12 hour course with the ratio mentioned above (2 to 1).
Many companies will already have employees completing this job role within the business and would just like their skills to be recognised. We would consider these individuals to be competent and, as such, just need a refresher or what we would call a conversion. These individuals have a good subject knowledge so we could consider a 1 day / 6 hour option, predominantly focusing on the practical element, including a test.
As with all of our courses we aim to cover all aspects but appreciate that perhaps sometimes you can't quite find a course that fits your needs. Please feel free to contact us if this is the case and we will endeavour to find a solution for you.Start Now
