Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) periodic training is to be monitored by DVSA to ensure drivers are not unnecessarily repeating training as part of the 35-hour requirement.
This follows a review of Driver CPC training and recommendations made by the European Commission which the Government has adopted.
What this means for drivers
DVSA will monitor drivers records to identify periodic training that doesn’t support their professional driver development because of unnecessary repetition.
If we identify unnecessary repetition we may take action which could include revoking a driver's Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
What drivers need to do
To make sure drivers continue to develop professionally and keep Great Britain’s roads safe they should take training which benefits them and their job. This will ensure they increase their knowledge of what it takes to continue to drive safely instead of repeating the same training session.
DVSA will only allow repetition of training when it supports a driver’s development. For example, if more than one day’s training is required to maintain a qualification such as driving dangerous goods.
What is Driver CPC?
In order to drive a lorry or bus professionally you will need a Driver CPC qualification. Once you have this you will receive a Driver’s Qualification Card (DQC). This will need to be renewed every 5 years by completing 35 hours of periodic CPC training.
Are you Eligible?
You can attend this training if one or more of the following statements applies to you:
- Passed your car test before 09.09.09
- Passed your Cat C1 or Cat C before 09.09.09
- Passed your Cat D1 or Cat D before 09.09.09
- Passed your Mod 4 Initial Qualification
- You need a valid UK driving licence
- You must attend seven hours of training per day
- You can check your CPC record, expiry and how many hours you still need to do online
Who should train?
All professional bus or lorry drivers require a valid Driver CPC (DQC) a qualification which should be renewed with additional periodic training every five years.
The demand of Large Goods vehicle (LGV) drivers, also known as Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV), is increasing. LGV/HGV drivers transport and deliver materials and goods all over the UK every single day and are critical to many businesses and communities.
Why should I train?
If you're looking for a new challenge and would like to help fill the UK's driver shortage, than a career on the road could be for you! Professional driving can offer a great salary, flexible hours, and long-term career prospects.

We have a large choice of practical, online or classroom based topics for you to choose from. Given the current climate we are only able to offer ADR or First Aid At Work as training that count towards Driver CPC training hours, not the full certification as this requires practical training that isn't possible in the current climate.
We have discount options for group bookings, flexible funding options, and can deliver on weekdays and weekends. Our Driver CPC JAUPT accredited number is AC02214.
We have a large choice of course topics, or we can build bespoke training to suit your company’s needs.
