Dulson Training Ltd is Shropshire’s LGV and commercial driver training specialists, helping professional drivers to get on the road, and providing refresher training for experienced drivers.
In this blog we take a look at the hugely important Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) and guide you through what you need to do to keep your Driver CPC up-to-date.
1. What is the Driver CPC Certificate?
The Driver CPC was first introduced across Europe from 2008. The aim was to provide deeper training to improve road safety and ensure high standards of driving by professional LGV HGV PSV drivers.
If you’re a professional bus, coach, or lorry driver for Class 2 or Class 1, you’ll almost certainly need a CPC as it is a legal requirement for almost all category C and D licence holders. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving professionally without a Driver CPC.
2. CPC Certificates Expiry
Once you complete your initial CPC qualification you will receive a card with a five year expiry date. You must renew this card at the end of each five year cycle. However to successfully renew this, you need to complete 35 hours of periodic training.
It’s up to you when you take the training courses, as long as you do them within the five- year period before your certificate expires.
3. Don’t leave it late to get your CPC training
In 2018 and 2019, many of the first issued CPC certificates will expire. Dulson Training is already beginning to hear from drivers who haven’t taken any of the 35 hours of refresher training during the period they’ve held their first five year certificate.
We strongly recommend that drivers schedule in their training sooner rather than later to ensure training courses are available. This will also give you the opportunity to spread out the five days of training over a longer period of time, rather than having to take them all at once which can disrupt your regular working schedule.
Remember, if your CPC certificate isn’t due to expire for a while, you can still take day long training courses now that all counts!
We have a large choice of high quality JAUPT accredited modules including Drivers Hours, Tachograph Use, Vehicle Defects, Health & Wellbeing, Working Time Directive and Emergency First Aid At Work. The Emergency First Aid can be additionally be certificated as a national qualification. We always aim to stand out for value and quality of training.
With a new JAUPT task force aiming to crackdown on poor quality training and short courses this is not the time to bend the rules with a quick fix. With BREXIT looming Driver CPC is not disappearing. RHA and FTA figures already show that most drivers are behind where they need to be for the next deadline in September 2019.
